Hospital Parking Fees

AHS reinstating parking fees for public September 1

Aug 13, 2020 | 10:42 AM

Alberta Health Services says parking fees at all hospitals in the province will be reinstated, starting August 31 for employees and September 1 for the general public.

Fees were waived back at the beginning of April as a measure to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and to not have health care workers need to worry about paying for parking while responding to the pandemic.

Now, AHS will be reinstating the fees as part of its “return to normal business”.

“AHS Parking Services has already enhanced cleaning and will continue to regularly clean all parking payment machines,” reads a statement from AHS. “Signs encouraging social distancing will be in place in areas where this additional guidance will help further reduce the spread of COVID-19.”

They add parking rates will return to what they were pre-pandemic and that coins and cash will still be accepted.

The province’s health care administrator says parking fees are intended to help them control traffic flow and ensure enough parking spaces are available while traffic once again increases.

At the time of the pause, AHS expected the freeze on parking fees would cost the organization around $7.6 million per month.
