New $377 million hospital coming to Dawson Creek

Sep 4, 2020 | 1:04 PM

A new $377 million hospital is coming to Dawson Creek.

In a release issued Friday, B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix says it became clear during the business planning stage of the upgrade on the current hospital that a new, modern hospital was needed.

“We are delivering a new, modern hospital on a standalone site, a project that will increase necessary services, help retain health-care professionals and bring jobs to the region,” said Dix, in a release.

“The South Peace region, its patients and health-care workers deserve nothing less.”

The new hospital, which will be built on 8th Street near Northern Lights College, will be approximately 209,000 square feet with 70 beds. The province says all beds will be in single rooms with ensuite washrooms.

The new hospital’s emergency department will also be double the size of the existing one. The B.C. government says the existing emergency department sees around 18,000 visits a year. The new emergency room will be able to handle approximately 25,000 visits a year.

Approximately 1,500 direct jobs and 900 indirect jobs are expected to be created during construction.

The province says future use of the current hospital site in the Mile Zero City will be determined after the new hospital is in operation.
