Other highlights from Monday’s Grande Prairie City Council meeting:

Monday marked the last annual organizational meeting for the current edition of city council. These set out meeting and deputy mayor schedules for the coming year. There will be a municipal election in Alberta October 18, 2021. The new mayor and council will be sworn in a week later. Nomination day will be September 21, 2021.

Council approved changes to its Land Use Bylaw, some of which deal with new restaurants and drinking establishments. This would be for both those classified as major or more than 300 square metres and minor, less than 300 square metres. Councillor Dylan Bressey voted against approval, saying it looks like the changes make it easier to set up a restaurant and bar than just a restaurant. More amendments are expected at a future meeting.

Council gave two of three readings to a new Business License Bylaw. Third reading has been tabled until the Council meeting set for November 16 to allow administration to do some more work on the bylaw. It would require all businesses in the city to have a license and reduce licensing fees for home-based operations.

Council approved having an annual diversity inclusion report presented to Council and the community each year.

Council voted unanimously in favour of the Bee City Resolution. This means the city pledges to make policies that will promote better habitats for pollinators. The idea came to the city from Seven Generations Energy.
