Mighty Peace Teachers’ Convention moving online for 2021

The Mighty Peace Teachers’ Convention will be moving online this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The convention takes place on March 4 & 5 and is an event that brings together over 1,500 teachers from the Peace Region for two days of workshops.

Jodie Dell, the President of the Mighty Peace Teachers’ Convention, says that work is underway to make the convention accessible to all teachers in the Peace Region.

“We are still doing a lot of planning and figuring out what it all entails. We are not just in Grande Prairie and Peace River, we have the smaller communities to think about as well.”

Dell says that they are looking into using websites like Zoom to help broadcast the convention, however plans are still in the works to see which streaming service they will use.

As of now, the planning of workshops and guest speakers are underway and will be announced at a later date.

“We are looking forward to making the 2021 convention memorable and making it one for the books with the new way that the world is going to I guess.”

While this year’s convention will take place online, the convention is looking at moving to a larger facility once the COVID-19 pandemic comes to an end and things get back to normal.

Dell tells EverythingGP that they are looking into holding the convention at the Community Knowledge Campus, which would provide some unique specialized spaces and will be closer to other locations such as the Eastlink Centre.

“We’ve been looking at the Knowledge Campus Centre and that is our plan to go to once we are able to meet back in person. We’ve been very fortunate to be able to use Peace Wapiti, Harry Balfour and the Composite (High School) and they were great places for us to have our convention. It was great to be able to go there, but we need to also find a spot where we can all convene together a little more easily due to the construction that is going to be happening at the Comp.”

Talks regarding a relocation of the convention remain ongoing and no final decision has been made.
