COVID-19 UPDATE: November 18

City of Grande Prairie records third COVID-19 death

Nov 18, 2020 | 4:20 PM

One of 11 deaths linked to COVID-19 over the last 24 hours in Alberta has been reported in the City of Grande Prairie, becoming the third fatality in the City since March from COVID-19.

Alberta Health says the individual was a man in his 60s, not in a continuing care facility. There have now been 41 people from the North Zone who have died from COVID-19 related complications since March. Those deaths are a part of the 443 in Alberta over that time.

Pointing to the fact that 111 Albertans have died in the month of November from COVID-19, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw stressed her concern with the rising number of “human costs” this month.

“We have lost Albertans to other causes in this time as well, and they are also mourned and missed. But the difference is that we did not have the collective power to prevent all of those other deaths. With COVID-19, we do have that power.”

“Almost one-quarter of our COVID-19 deaths have happened since November 1. If we do not change our trajectory, the implications are grim.”

The death was announced as the City added four new cases of COVID-19, along with seven more recoveries. There are now 83 active cases in the City as of the end of the day Tuesday.

Meanwhile, in the County of Grande Prairie, there were two new cases reported along with three recoveries, dropping the active case total there to 32.
