Left turn lane additions along 92 Street being explored by City Hall

Some improvements could be coming to 92 Street, which could see left turn lanes be constructed at two different intersections.

A presentation of a report was made to the Infrastructure and Economic Development committee on Tuesday, where Capital Planning and Construction Manager Matthew Hinton provided some potential safety upgrades to the stretch of road, including the possibility of installing a left turn lane along the southbound lane at both 80 Avenue and 72 Avenue along 92 Street.

“We are potentially looking at some upgrades to the two intersections there, with adding some turn base for left turns, and a potential right turn lane at 72 Avenue for people heading northbound,” said Hinton to EverythingGP.

The upgrades would include the widening of the road in those spots to allow for a through lane for those continuing southbound.

The report was presented following a request made back in August by Councillor Chris Thiessen, and voted on by the committee, for some potential safety upgrades to the east side corridor, after Thiessen said he had heard from many residents about safety concerns regarding that stretch of road during his two terms on council.

The stretch from 68 Avenue to 72 Avenue has seen some modernization, including the installation of streetlights.

However, the stretch of road from 72 Avenue to 84 Avenue still reflects past construction practices, including ditches on either side of the road and no streetlights

“There are some people that have concerns with it being so dark along there,” said Hinton. “It’s no different than driving along a rural road

However, Hinton says the full installation of streetlights will not happen until the road is reconstructed to be a four-lane road, work which has been identified in the City’s Transportation Master Plan.

Should City Council approve the 2021 Capital budget at its meeting on Monday as is, which includes funding for this work, Hinton says the upgrades to the intersections could be made as early as next year.

“We’re hoping to hire a consultant next year to do the design for us, and potential construction (could start) either late 2021 or 2022 sometime.”
