Gusty winds blustering through Grande Prairie area Monday

The winds are gusting in the Grande Prairie area Monday afternoon.

Meteorologist with Environment Canada Blaine Lowry says winds are forecasted to be gusting between 60 to 80 km/h through this afternoon and into the evening.

Lowry adds the blustering winds come as a low-pressure system is moving through northern Alberta Monday.

“But with those winds, we’re actually going to see some warming temperatures. There is warmer air just off the surface… that’s going to mix down to the surface with those winds.”

Environment Canada told EverythingGP late last week that daytime highs through this week in the Grande Prairie area were expected to be above seasonal averages.

As of 5 p.m. Monday, the high for Tuesday is forecasted at 4 degrees, Wednesday at plus one and Thursday at plus 4.

A wind warning has been issued for the BC Peace River region, including Dawson Creek and Fort St. John, where Lowry says gusts are reaching around 90 km/h. He adds a wind warning would be issued for the Grande Prairie area if gusts reach that level, however Lowry is not expecting that to be the case.

Lowry adds he expects the gusty winds to diminish later this evening and into the overnight.
