Farm groups hoping AgriStability changes are implemented

Dec 3, 2020 | 1:38 PM

GRANDE PRAIRIE, AB. – Farm groups are welcoming possible changes to AgriStability.

Federal agriculture minister Marie-Claude Bibeau told her provincial and territorial counterparts during their meeting last week that the federal government’s proposal would see the compensation rate increased to 80 per cent from 70. The reference margin limit would also be removed.

Grain Growers of Canada says in a release it wants consensus among federal and provincial ministers to get the changes put in place.

GGC adds while the provinces are facing “fiscal challenges”, it adds that agriculture is “more than worth the investment in order to drive an economic recovery – and support the food security of Canadians”.

Chair Jeff Nielsen says farmers need what he calls “a predictable, bankable support system.”

The National Sheep Network says it is also urging the various governments to make these changes.

“The NSN appreciates the proposals put forward during last week’s meetings. We are urging the governments to accelerate changes to BRM programming to make it more predictable and bankable for when producers need support,” says NSN chair Ryan Greir in a news release posted to the Alberta Lamb Association web site.

There is no indication yet when the changes might be put in place.
