Alberta removing licence plate sticker requirement as transition to reflective plates begins

Dec 7, 2020 | 10:28 AM

Starting in 2021, Albertans will no longer be required to have expiry stickers on their licence plates, as the province begins moving toward adopting reflective plates.

The province first required registration expiry dates to be visible on Alberta licence plates in 1974. Now with advances in technology, the province says stickers marking the month and year of registration, as well as stickers for fleet vehicles and permanent trailers, will no longer be issued starting January 1.

This move comes as the government plans to transition to high-definition reflective licence plates in the fall of 2021.

“Alberta’s government has been looking for ways to improve and modernize the delivery of registry services for Albertans,” said Minister of Service Alberta Nate Glubish.
“By moving to reflective licence plates, expiry stickers become redundant and outdated.”

In a release, the province says reflective plates are more easily scanned by automated licence plate readers, which will help law enforcement agencies using the technology to validate licence plate registration at the roadside.

They add reflective plates will be issued on a go-forward basis after the current inventory of painted licence plates runs out in the fall.

“Registry agents support this next step to modernizing the delivery of registry services. We applaud Minister Glubish for taking the initiative to make changes that will benefit Albertans and cut red tape,” said Association of Alberta Registry Agents CEO Rikki McBride.

Vehicle owners will still be responsible for renewing their registration on time and will require a valid certificate of registration. Stickers will still be required for farm vehicles and prorated commercial vehicles participating in the International Registration Plan.

Alberta will join Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec and the Northwest Territories in removing expiry stickers from license plates.
