Tuesday marks Canada’s Agriculture Day

Feb 23, 2021 | 5:00 AM

Like the old saying goes: if you eat, you’re involved in agriculture.

People in Canada are being asked to raise a fork on February 23 to mark Canada’s Agriculture Day.

A release from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada says the annual day is hosted by Agriculture More than Ever and is meant to bring together people in the food and agriculture business to talk about how Canada can be a global food supplier.

This year’s discussion is expected to focus on economic recovery from the pandemic.

“Today, let’s celebrate our local producers and all those who work hard to keep our grocery stores stocked with quality Canadian food,” says Canada’s Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Marie-Claude Bibeau in that same release. “Farmers and all food sector workers in Canada have succeeded despite the many challenges posed by COVID-19. Just as we commend the health care workers for their heroic efforts, I encourage everyone to show their support and appreciation for our local producers as well.

“On Canada’s Agriculture Day, we say THANK YOU.”

Ag. Canada says Canadian exports of agri-food and seafood reached $74 billion in 2020, a 10.4 per cent increase from 2019. One in eight jobs in Canada are in the agriculture sector.

Farm Credit Canada will host a virtual fireside chat to mark Canada’s Agriculture Day. Canada’s ambassador to China Dominic Barton will be there to talk about opportunities for Canadian agriculture. There will also be a panel discussion about global growth prospects for food and how agriculture can help Canada’s economy recover.

This event will start at 9 a.m. Alberta time. Registration and more information are available through Eventbrite.

People who want to take part are asked to post and tweet agriculture-related photos and forks-up selfies using the hashtags #CdnAgDay and #CdnAg. People can also cook an all-Canadian meal.
