Grande Prairie to host Alberta Disc Golf Provincial Championship

Mar 15, 2021 | 12:59 PM

The Alberta Disc Golf Provincial Championship will be held in Grande Prairie for the first time ever this summer.

The provincial tournament will be held in the city on August 14 & 15 and will also be used as an opportunity to celebrate the Grande Prairie Disc Golf Club’s 10-year anniversary.

Michael Curtiss, the President of the Grande Prairie Disc Golf Club, says this will be a great opportunity to showcase Grande Prairie and the growth of the sport in the city.

“We’ve had Thrill Hill, a course that we started on for almost ten years now, and since then, we’ve added South Bear Creek, and a course out in the County at Evergreen Park.”

“We’ve really grown our player base, and courses here, so it seems like a good time to bring it up and showcase GP and all the work our club members have put in.”

Currently, there are 40 active registered members in the Grande Prairie Disc Golf Club, however, Curtiss adds there are several hundred people who regularly play the sport every summer.

With provincials coming to Grande Prairie, the city and club will have an opportunity to welcome lots of disc golfers from out of town.

“For provincials, we’re looking to host about 100-150 players,” said Curtiss. “We’re going to spread them out over our three courses and set-up tee times so everyone is socially distanced. It’s going to be good and we’re ready for the challenge of hosting 150 people and making sure we do so safely.”

Anyone can enter the provincial tournament for a fee.

While the tournament is open to anyone who wants to join, Curtiss recommends newcomers wanting to play get some practice reps in before registering.

“We do have four (local) tournaments going before provincials, so if people are wanting to play in provincials or take on disc golf as a sport, we recommend getting into those smaller tournaments that we have leading up. Get some experience, grow your skills and then you’ll be all ready for provincials in August.”

The Grande Prairie Disc Golf Club will host the following tournaments this year:

  • Thrill of the Flight, Women’s Global Event – May 8, 2021
  • Swan City Showdown – May 15-16, 2021
  • Thrill Hill Throwdown – June 19, 2021
  • Bear Brawl – July 31, 2021
  • Alberta Provincial Championship – August 14-15, 2021
  • Fly the Coop – September 11, 2021

The club encourages anyone with any questions about disc golf to visit them on their website or Facebook page.
