Two-year process for Comp site plan, more consultations to come, says Mayor

Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton says a two-year process has gone into coming up with the Avondale Area Redevelopment Plan.

This will be used to decide what will go where the current Comp high school sits after the new one currently under construction nearby opens.

“This area redevelopment plan was through a couple years of consultation. It includes everything from recreation, outdoor and indoor, to including the existing Peace Wapiti school. The overall plan is very comprehensive and council looks forward to hearing more in the time ahead as there are three phases to this, short-term, medium-term, and long-term.”

Short-term plans would call for demolition of the current Comp and the pool part of the Leisure Centre. Replacement sports fields would go in.

In the medium-term, the two indoor soccer pitches would be demolished and a new recreation facility would go up close by.

Clayton says the Swan City Football Club is working on a replacement for the indoor pitchers.

“I would be optimistic that there will be a facility replacement. I don’t see soccer being without a facility in the meantime.”

Long-term would see the current Peace Wapiti Academy demolished for commercial and multi-family development. It also calls for connecting 105 Street to 116 Avenue. This has led to some concerns from nearby residents about increased traffic. City planners say the third phase would be 30 to 50 years from now.

Clayton says consultations would continue, even though council has approved this concept.

“This is the first level and then, as we go through other phases, there will be continued consultation on this and more information provided.”

The Avondale Area Redevelopment Plan was approved at Monday’s Council meeting.
