RCMP encouraging residents to report any suspicious activities

Mar 31, 2021 | 5:00 AM

RCMP throughout Alberta are encouraging residents to report any suspicious activities they might see to police while being out in their community.

While there has not been an increase in crime, Cst. Chantelle Kelly with the RCMP says the community is the eyes and ears of the RCMP and without their help, they wouldn’t be able to do their jobs.

“We’re just trying to encourage people if they see something out of the ordinary or something suspicious to immediately report it to police. If it turns out to be nothing, then that is good news and we are doing our job, which is checking up on things and keeping the community safe.”

Kelly tells EverythingGP residents should not be scared to give them a call if they see something that isn’t right.

“I’ve been a member for 14 years and I’ve talked to people who’ve thought something seemed to be off or suspicious, but they don’t really do anything about it and stew on it. Sometimes doing that doesn’t give us a chance to respond or follow up to maybe see if it was anything.”

The RCMP is also reminding residents that when reporting suspicious activity, be ready to provide as many of the following facts as possible:

  • What happened?
  • Where and when did it occur?
  • Is anyone injured?
  • Description of vehicle(s)
  • License plate number(s)
  • Time and direction of travel of suspect(s)
  • Description of suspect(s), including clothing

As for whether the calls should be made through 911 or the detachment directly, Cst. Kelly says there are a few things to consider.

“If there is a crime in progress like a break and enter, an assault or an impaired driver call 911 immediately. If it is something that you want to report as suspicious, we do ask you to call the main detachment line and speak to a dispatcher and provide information.”

Anyone who would like to report a crime anonymously can do so by contacting Crime Stoppers.
