Town of Sexsmith gifts residents flowers to show support during COVID-19

May 15, 2021 | 7:00 AM

Residents in the Town of Sexsmith were given a nice surprise Friday, as all members of Sexsmith Town Council and several volunteers handed out flowers to all of the homes in the community.

Sexsmith Mayor Kate Potter says they handed out flowers last year as a ‘one-time’ thing because Chautauqua Day was cancelled. However. because the gesture brought a smile to so many faces, they decided to do it again.

“We decided it was important to try and connect with the residents and really thank them for the efforts they’ve put in trying to care for one another throughout the challenges. It’s just a small thing we can do to encourage them and thank them for being a part of our community.”

Potter says on Friday their goal was to deliver the flowers to 1,000 houses in the town.

She tells EverythingGP the reaction of people receiving their flowers was great to see.

“It’s been a long year and I think everybody is feeling fatigued. (The flowers) can be used as a bit of a pick-me-up and bright spot for people to look at something that continues to give up. We’ve had very positive reactions as we’ve gone house to house.”

The flowers did come as a surprise to residents.

“There was no indication before today that this would happen,” said Potter. “For most people, there will be a happy little flower greeting for you when you come home from work.”

The flowers did come at a small cost to the Town, but Potter said they were able to get an excellent deal from Braeheid Gardens. In the end, she says giving out the flowers was worth it.
