Organizers thrilled with community support of 2021 Cash and Camping Lottery

Organizers for the 2021 Cash and Camping Lottery are grateful for the community’s support of this year’s lottery, especially after the many hurdles and challenges the clubs faced to put it all together.

The annual lottery is put on by the Swan City, Sunrise and After Five Rotary Clubs of Grande Prairie, which made its return this year after having to cancel in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

That challenge of trying to re-organize after taking the previous year off was just one of the hurdles organizers had to overcome.

“We had to find a new sales location, pivot according to the ongoing pandemic, repair prizes after a break-in, and battle a historic heat wave,” said Lottery Chair Dave Cook.

“However, Grande Prairie and region opened their hearts and strongly supported the Lottery, local businesses, and partner groups and we came out strong.”

Cook estimates over $70,000 was brought in through the lottery, with a majority of that going to benefit 10 local non-profit groups, like the Seniors Outreach Centre, the Grande Prairie Public School Division Education Foundation and the Grande Prairie and District Catholic Schools’ nutrition programs.

“Then on top of that, the Swan City Rotary Club, the After Five Rotary Club and the Sunrise Rotary Club will all share the resources… and those three clubs donate a lot to the community over the year,” said Cook.

“Probably over 60 (non-profits) benefit in the Grande Prairie region from the dollars we receive.”

Cook adds that in addition to that money raised, $2,620 was raised for the Grande Prairie Food Bank from the final two days of ticket sales, where they received $1 from each ticket sold at the sales building.

The draws for both the Cash and Camping Lottery and the Summer Cash 50/50, with a record pot of $290,000 to be split between the winner and the Rotary clubs, will be held on July 13. Those winners will be posted on the Swan City Rotary Clubs Lottery Facebook page and website by July 22.

Following those draws on Tuesday, the winners of the 10 Days of Summer lottery will be announced twice a day on weekdays on both Q99 and Big Country 93.1 from July 14-27.
