U14 Female Storm win gold at Steveston Meltdown tournament in Vancouver

Jul 12, 2021 | 2:03 PM

The U14 Peace Country Female Storm were big winners this past weekend, as the club won the gold medal at the 2021 Steveston Meltdown tournament.

The 2021 Steveston Meltdown tournament was held from July 9-11 in Vancouver and included teams from Alberta, the Okanagan and the Vancouver area.

U14 Storm Head Coach Dave Hamilton says it was great to see everyone get back on the ice and playing meaningful hockey.

“Every time we touched the ice, every shift, every period we got better, and we ended up in the semi-finals. We won in a shootout to advance to the final and then we ended up tied 2-2 going into the third period (of the final) and scored with five minutes left to win gold. We went 5-1 in that tournament.”

The U14 female Storm was put together by the Grande Prairie Storm Junior A club as part of a spring development season the organization came up with for both males and females.

According to Hamilton, the Storm helped put together the teams for players who had their seasons cut short because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the majority of the spring months, both teams practiced various drills and skills. The tournaments were the only game-action they had this season.

While it was a different season for most players, Hamilton says it was rewarding to see everyone get on the ice and finally play in front of their families.

“Everyone was fired up,” said Hamilton. “More so the parents because us as the coaches we get to be on the ice with the girls when there were restrictions on. The fact that the parents were able to watch their kids (finally) play in a hockey game was exciting for us.”

The U14 team was made up of the following players:

  • Makena Lloyd-Howe
  • Karsyn Utz
  • Kamryn West
  • Victoria Willsey
  • Kiana Ehrenberg
  • Charlie Dunphy
  • Molly Hamilton
  • Danika Aubin
  • Stayshaa Heibert
  • Sydney Hartman
  • Rianna Loberg
  • Maggie Fitzpatrick
  • Bradlee Fisher
  • Mackenzie Gould-Sharpe
  • Lola Edwards
  • Ava Holman
  • Jordi Holman
  • Sarah Kjemhus
  • Rylee McLeod

Hockey Alberta says it is hopeful they’ll be able to resume a full hockey season in the fall.
