Other highlights from Monday’s meeting of Grande Prairie City Council”

Snow and Ice Control Policy

Council has approved some revisions to its Snow and Ice Control Policy.

This includes having Priority 2 roads cleared a maximum of five days after the Priority 1 ones are plowed and cleared. The revised policy as first proposed had said up to five days.

Also, there are new rules for where snow goes when it is plowed. If there is a sidewalk on one side of the road only, snow will go to the other side. If there is a sidewalk on both sides, it will be put in windrows or pushed onto the city’s boulevard.

Piles will be left in the centre of cul-de-sacs until they can be hauled away.

Also, council approved a motion from Councillor Dylan Bressey to have a review of snow and ice control, including costing of service levels and a survey of what other municipalities do, in time for the 2022-23 winter season.

Mission Heights Ravine

Council has asked administration to report back to the standing committee level about concerns from Mission Heights residents about a ravine just south of 84 Avenue.

The city had deemed the area for naturalization rather than regular maintenance like mowing because it was considered a storm pond.

A resident who spoke to Council Monday said since that decision there has been erosion, that longer grass is attracting wildlife like coyotes, and the longer grass is more of a fire hazard.

She also pointed out that residents paid higher taxes to have the area maintained, but the taxes were not lowered when the decision was made to let it go back to its natural state.

Community Group Funding Approved

Council approved several community group operating funding requests for 2022 and 2023.

The total is $3,889,561 for 2022 and $3,929,636 for 2023.

Approval had been put off at the June 14 meeting to allow for more discussion.

Council also approved $40,000 in capital funding for the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie for 2022. It also approved $30,000 for the Art Gallery to use for exhibitions in 20022.

That money would come from the Future Expenditure Reserve.
