Grande Prairie RCMP detachment launching Facebook page

The Grande Prairie RCMP are gearing up for the launch of their Facebook page on September 7, in hopes of further connecting with residents of the area.

Sgt. Shawn Graham says having a Facebook page specifically for Grande Prairie allows the detachment to speak to individuals the RCMP serve first-hand, at a local level.

“It’s another way to reach a larger audience and making connections with people in the communities on the topical matters that are occurring within that area.”

In efforts to better engage with the community, Graham says the page will allow community members to chat back and forth with members in the detachment, as well as help generate policing tips.

“They’ll be able to provide responses and information, just like they would be able to do in the main Alberta pages as well,” said Graham.

“It’s important for us to hear from the public, we can receive suggestions when we can better interact with the public to improve and just build on our existing relationships.”

Graham says the Grande Prairie RCMP detachment page will be a subsection of the Alberta RCMP Facebook page, as will the pages of other participating detachments including Lloydminister, Banff, and Wetaskiwin.

“There’s still the main RCMP Alberta pages and accounts, but different communities have different needs and these detachment pages, which will fall into those main accounts,” explained Graham.

“They’re just a way we hope to engage more on a local level, what the needs of residents are in Grande Prairie.”

Similar to the 9 p.m. routine, which is property theft prevention tips the Alberta RCMP social media account shares, Graham says the local page will provide information that is more prevalent to people in the region.

“We’ll still highlight things that are on the main page, but just across, it’s a multi-use for it in regard to communicating with the public,” explains Graham.

“It’s a more localized approach to the work that’s being done. There will be a focus on community, we’re going to highlight all aspects of policing from community policing to operational aspects.”

Graham says communication has always been a top priority for the Grande Prairie RCMP detachment, which is why they have been continually finding new, unique ways to connect with the community to share information and tips.
