Embers originating from a cook stove chimney has been determined as the cause of a fire at a picnic shelter in Saskatoon Island Provincial Park Sunday afternoon.

The Wembley Fire Department and County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Service members from Clairmont were called to the fire at around 4:15 p.m. on October 3. As crews arrived they discovered the fire on the roof of the structure was being pushed by high winds.

However, the blaze was quickly brought under control and extinguished, according to officials. They add damage was limited to the roof of the building.

“With this call, damage was limited because of an immediate call to 911 and a prompt response by the Wembley Fire Department,” said Deputy Fire Chief Jason Nesbitt of the County Regional Fire Service.
