Veterans Memorial Gardens hosting Indigenous Veterans Day ceremony Monday

The Veterans Memorial Gardens is hosting their annual Indigenous Veterans Day at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 8.

Renee Charbonneau, the Executive Director for the Canadian Motorcycle Tourism Association, says this day is significant because it celebrates all those who have and continue to fight for our country.

“Indigenous Veterans Day is a day that honours the warrior, the veteran and remembers the fallen,” she explained.

“It’s a hybrid ceremony that brings together beautiful aspects of Indigenous tradition and culture with military tradition and culture.”

Charbonneau tells EverythingGP this is the fifth year they’ve decided to host the ceremony.

The event begins with a smudging ceremony, followed by a colour party for Indigenous families, a moment to remember those who have fallen and then a moment to talk about the living, as well as prayers and poetry.

“This isn’t instead of Remembrance Day, it’s on top of it. It’s more geared towards the veteran as opposed to the killed in action solder,” she said. “Yes, we take the time to remember the killed in action solder, but we honour the veteran. The one who came home, the one who made it and those still serving.”

She adds the ceremony is powerful and is something people should witness.

“It’s very touching and I really invite them all to come on out,” she said.

There will also be refreshments and snack items available at the ceremony. The event is expected to wrap up at 11:30 a.m.

The Veterans Memorial Gardens is located at 10121 93 Street in Grande Prairie.
