Virtual events set to mark Addictions Awareness Week in Grande Prairie

Nov 19, 2021 | 4:15 PM

A series of virtual events are set to mark National Addictions Awareness Week in Grande Prairie, which runs from November 21-27.

NAAW is aimed to provide opportunities to address harms related to substance use as well as inform the public about prevention, treatment, and recovery supports and services available in the community.

“The effects of addiction go beyond the individual and may include their family, friends and society,” says Alberta Health Services. “Preventing and reducing harm related to substance use and addiction is everyone’s business.”

The first event will be held on Monday, Nov. 22 from 1-2 p.m. from AHS titled the National Addiction Awareness Week (NAAW) Virtual Presentation. Registration is required prior to the event, which can be done here.

Then on Tuesday, Nov. 23, the Grande Prairie Aboriginal Circle of Services will present ahkameyimok: Resilience, an online presentation with Laurent Isadore. Pre-registration is required to attend the virtual event by clicking here, or by contacting Wendy Goulet at 780-219-8047 or gpacos@outlook.com.

On Thursday, Nov. 25 at noon the Northreach Society will be hosting its National Addiction Awareness Week (NAAW) Lunch and Learn. Attendees will have the chance to learn about substances, harm reduction and naloxone. The meeting is being held over Zoom. The Meeting ID is 881 7243 0615.

“If you or someone you know is struggling with an addiction, please know help is available,” adds AHS. “Albertans can get more information and help by calling Health Link at 811 or the Addiction Helpline at 1-866-332-2322.”
