School zone speed limits back in effect Monday

Kids are back in school Monday and that means school zones will be back in effect.

Sargent Ross Gear with Enforcement Services in Grande Prairie says roads are icy and is asking drivers to slow down.

“Give yourself an opportunity to stop in an emergency situation.”

“We just went through a period of darkness, and it is still pretty dark. The days are pretty short. The lighting might not be the best in school zones and so that is another thing to be conscious of.”

Gear is also asking anyone dropping off kids to be mindful of parking zones near schools. He says these are designed to help people come and go quickly and someone parking in the wrong place can lead to a traffic back-up.

He adds school zones are patrolled throughout the school year.

“That’s one of our duties. We take it very seriously. We take our children’s safety very, very seriously and so our officers are out there.”

“If school is in session, our officers will be out there making patrols and trying to help the schools out.”
