RCMP reminding motorists to check expiry dates on drivers license and vehicle registration

The Grande Prairie RCMP is reminding motorists to check the expiry dates on their driver’s licence and vehicle registration.

Cst. Lindsay Ralph says they have stopped motorists in the region and their registration happens to be expired. She says lots of the time, the driver isn’t aware their registration or licence has expired.

“It is something we (motorists) forget about. We put the paperwork into our vehicle and sometimes it is difficult to remember the same time next year you have to go in and get it renewed,” she explained.

Ralph says the same thing with goes with driver’s licenses.

“Majority of drivers licences are good for five years, however depending on the class, it could be good for 1-5 years.”

She tells EverythingGP it is important to periodically check your licence and registration as operating a motor vehicle with an expired license or expired motor vehicle registration could potentially face a violation ticket.

“There are different violations depending on the Traffic Safety Act, but there is a violation for each of those,” Ralph stated. “So, operating a vehicle with an expired license and operating with an expired registration for the vehicle (are the fines you could receive).”

“If you do have those items expired, the onus is on the motor vehicle operator to make sure those documents are valid.”

Class 5 drivers’ licences need to be renewed every five years and expire on your birthday.

Vehicle registration expires annually on an assigned month based on your surname.
