Opioid crisis

Interactive opioid exhibit coming to Beaverlodge March 2-5

Feb 10, 2022 | 1:20 PM

An interactive opioid exhibit aimed at reducing the stigma surrounding opioid use is set to come to Beaverlodge in March.

County of Grande Prairie FCSS Director Kathleen Turner says the interactive exhibit is titled, ‘Somebody’s Someone – The Opioid Crisis in Our Community’ is meant to teach attendees what the opioid crisis is, who it is impacting and what resources are available to help.

“We know that opioid use is not going away. If anything it seems to be increasing, our rate of deaths and admissions to emergency rooms for opioid use have been rising, so it’s a continual problem.”

She says the interactive portion of the exhibit is taking a personal and immersive approach to opioid use.

“The interactive exhibit is going to be set up as a walk-through exhibit. It will take you through stories of three individuals and their journey with opioid use and the outcome,” she explained.

“It really personalizes from three different aspects from three different people/situations on how the opioid use impacted them.”

Turner hopes those who attend can gain a deeper understanding of how opioid use and the opioid crisis can impact anyone.

“This isn’t a them problem; this impacts each and every one of us, in one way or another. So to have that better understanding and awareness, and to know what the resources are to help each other and our family members will help.”

The exhibit is being presented by Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) in the County of Grande Prairie and Towns of Beaverlodge and Wembley, along with the Beaverlodge Victim Services Unit Society, Justice for Justice Society, Horse Lake First Nation, Alberta Health Services, Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta, Western Cree Tribal Council, and Northreach.

Admission is free and open to the public. It will run from March 2-5 at the Beaverlodge Community Centre.

The opening reception takes place on March 2 from 2 to 3:30 p.m, with regular exhibit hours set for March 2 from 2 to 8 p.m., March 3 and 4 from 1 to 8 p.m., and March 5 from 1 to 4 p.m.
