“…Go say thank you”: National Volunteer Week being celebrated in Grande Prairie

Apr 27, 2022 | 9:00 AM

The City of Grande Prairie and County of Grande Prairie has proclaimed April 24-30, 2022 as National Volunteer Week.

Anything that you do that impacts your quality of life has a very high likelihood of a volunteer organization behind it, according to the Grande Prairie Regional Association of Volunteer Organizations Executive Director Carol-Anne Pasemko.

“In the last year and a bit, volunteers in this community have contributed in incoming volunteer hours almost 48 million dollars.”

“People don’t realize the impact that the charitable organizations have in a community. If you go to a school playground, those playgrounds were put there, the money was raised for, they were purchased, installed with labour… they came from a volunteer group!”

Pasemko says the volunteering sector has been struggling and negatively impacted by Covid-19.

“If you’re aware of an organization that is a non-profit and if that non-profit has done anything for in the last year… then go say thank you.”

Pasemko feels “if you don’t have quality of life, then what you have is the destruction of a community.”

She says volunteers have the ability to attract new families, professionals, and services to an area by promoting growth in the region.

The Grande Prairie and District Chamber of Commerce has partnered with GPRAVO for National Volunteer Week with a Non-Profit/Charitable Sector Business Showcase on Thursday, April 28 at the Jackpot Grill and Events Centre from 5-7 p.m.

If you are looking at volunteering in the community and don’t know where to start go to GPRAVO’s website to learn more.
