Weiner Dog Derby this Sunday

Jul 22, 2022 | 12:14 PM

After a huge turnout of over 4,000 people at the first Weiner Dog Derby in 2019, it’s back on at Evergreen Park this Sunday at the J.D.A Raceway.

Two heats of eight dachshunds will be taking the track during The Horses at Evergreen Park, which starts at 1:15 p.m.

Don Moon, Marketing and Sponsorship Manager at Evergreen Park says wiener dog owners have been chomping at the bit to race again.

“We have seven horse races and then the dogs will go in between some of the races.”

“They almost disappear in the dirt from the track with their stubby little legs… it’s so darn cute,” he laughed.

Moon said the dogs race around 50 yards, and “they are full of enthusiasm and there’s a big crowd cheering them on, it gets them going!”

Trophies are given out to the winners of the heats and there’s also a costume contest for any dachshund brought to Evergreen.

“After the fourth race, they’re going to parade in front of the grandstands, they’ll be some judging and the best-costumed dachshund will win a trophy too,” says Moon.

The 50/50 this Sunday will be benefitting Tiny Hands of Hope, a non-profit society formed to help families touched by all types of infant loss, including pregnancy loss, neonatal loss, stillbirth, SIDS and infant death to the age of 24 months.
