Football officials wanted for upcoming seasons in Grande Prairie

Sep 1, 2022 | 2:04 PM

The Grande Prairie Football Officials Association is putting out their annual call to anyone that might be interested in taking up officiating at the high school and bantam level.

Greg Remple with the Grande Prairie Football Officials Association says they need a few more people to help them out this year.

Anyone can apply to be an official, but Remple says he is looking for people at least 14 years of age or older.

“Just for the maturity, and they are dealing with junior high and high school students, so we’d like to have people that are more mature, other than that no, male or female,” said Remple.

He added they would love for applicants to have some knowledge of the game, but it’s not a deal breaker.

“Knowledge of the football game is always helpful, but we definitely provide training and take the time to work people into it, that’s not a problem if they’re not totally familiar with the game, we will work with them.”

Officials will also get their fair share of work in, as high school games go on Fridays and bantam games are played on Saturdays, starting next week (September 5) and running through to the end of October.

“Most of the high school games are Friday evenings, and locally most of the time, there are two games, usually they have one game at 5 o’clock and then the follow up with a second game at 8 o’clock, and the bantam games pretty much run on Saturdays and they usually have two games, sometimes three games on a Saturday.”

Anyone interested in becoming an official can contact Greg Remple at 780-933-8548 or by email at greg.remple@gmail.com.
