The City of Grande Prairie is trying to make sports more equal with Girl Zone

Sep 1, 2022 | 4:55 PM

The City of Grande Prairie has launched a new one-day event to encourage gender equality in sports and recreation.

Hayley Kramps, Programming and Event Supervisor at the City of Grande Prairie said in a news release: “Recent trends suggest there is a decreased participation rate of girls in recreation and sport activities since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. GirlZone is a way for the City to create a barrier and judgment-free environment for girls to explore new activities they otherwise wouldn’t have tried.”

The event will take place across multiple facilities with trained staff helping the girls learn.

All activities are done in 40-minute segments and include activities such as:

  • Bike Skills with Nitehawk at the South Bear Creek Park
  • Beach Volleyball with Sandzone
  • Cooking with AHS at the Eastlink Centre
  • Parkour at APE Parkour
  • Introduction to Fitness class at the Eastlink Centre
  • Soccer with Swan City Football Club at the indoor soccer pitch

The day will run from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and include lunch with a presentation from a motivational speaker.

Registration for this event does cost $20, and you can pre-register today by clicking here.
