Travelers coming into Grande Prairie’s downtown area from the west will soon notice some new signage to welcome them to the City Centre.

Downtown Association Executive Director Wendy Bosch says a $240,126 grant from the Canada Community Revitalization Fund has allowed them to finish off this project.

Bosch says this project has been in the works for a few years.

“When the city of Grande Prairie was putting out their new signage, this was supposed to be tagged on with it but we did not get that piece done. And then we wanted to do something a bit grander, so we were fortunate enough to apply for a grant. And after an extensive amount of time due to COVID, we got the news that we were fortunate enough to get the grant.”

Bosch says the new signage, which will replace the existing “Welcome to Grande Prairie” structure just west of 214 Place, will depict a skyline of the city centre.

“It is just going to say City Centre on it. And then it willl have the skyline of 214 Place, Nordic Court, Windsor Court, the museum, the library, the Telus building is also in there.”

Total cost of the project was 320 thousand dollars.

Bosch says the new signage ties in nicely with the recent completion of the Downtown Revitalization project.

“Now that (the Downtown Revitalization Project) is complete with its four phases, we go into something that we can put the icing on the cake. So the image on the signs, and there will be branded poles at every entrance of the city core. Just to indicate where people are. People need to feel how special their city core is.”

Bosch says they are grateful for the grant, adding they would not have been able to complete this project without it.

The new signage is expected to be up by the end of the month.
