RCMP hosting five town halls to receive public feedback

Nov 20, 2022 | 8:38 PM

Five town halls will be hosted over a week-long period by the Grande Prairie RCMP, to speak with the public about how they can better serve the community.

Superintendent Lee Brachman says the RCMP’s intent with these town halls is to understand the direct needs of the community.

” The priorities that are developed for the next fiscal year are done with significant community consultation in mind, they are done with the input of the community, and with direct feedback from the community. In essence, we are making sure our priorities reflect the needs here locally.”

He adds these town halls aren’t a new concept for RCMP, they use to do them on a regular basis but had to go on a hiatus because of the Covid-19 pandemic, having their last town hall in 2019.

Brachman says residents should expect a short presentation before they open the floor and hear from residents ‘lived reality of what they see from where they live and work, and how it meshes with their own data.

“The structure we envision for these town halls is to provide a short presentation to the community members there on the crime trends we’ve been seeing over the last few years, city-wide. Then there are five town halls in total, each of them being in a different area of the city, so we’re going to tailor those presentations to the specific area as well.”

RCMP will use the information they gather from the public to help with priority policing, resource deployment models, and more.

Brachman says he does expect some questions regarding the proposed provincial police force, however, that isn’t the intention of these town halls.

“The intention isn’t necessarily to touch on the larger political discussions that are going to play out in the weeks and months ahead, you know recognizing that people are going to have those types of questions I’m sure, but really the intent is to offer up some information about what’s going on locally, what we’re seeing, and then people will have a chance to say what they’re seeing.”
