City looking for public feedback on a municipal police force

Dec 6, 2022 | 2:37 PM

As the city looks into the possibility of transitioning to a municipal police force, Grande Prairie residents are being asked to provide feedback on what policing services they feel are most valuable to the community.

Residents can fill out an online survey from now until December 23, by clicking here.

Interviews focus groups, and stakeholder meetings will also take place as part of the consultation process, as will a public open house event, which will take place sometime in the new year

Dates, times, and locations for the open house will be announced in January.

“Hearing from Grande Prairie residents on their expectations for policing in the community is critical so that City Council can make a well-informed assessment on transitioning to a municipal police force,” said Mayor Jackie Clayton in a release.

MNP has been hired by the city to conduct public engagement and compile a detailed transition plan for the possible establishment of a municipal police service in Grande Prairie.

Those reports are expected to be presented to City Council sometime in early 2023.
