Rotary’s Dignity Drive returns after successful fall campaign

Mar 31, 2023 | 1:40 PM

Four local Rotary Clubs in Grande Prairie have teamed up yet again for the bi-annual Dignity Drive to benefit the vulnerable population in the region.

Donations of new, unused socks and underwear will be collected throughout the entire month of April, with drop-off points at Bonnett’s Energy Centre, Centre 2000, Costco, New Horizon Co-op, Keddie’s Tack and Western Wear, and Edwards Factory Outlet.

Heather Jones, a member of the Swan City Rotary Club and a part of the Dignity Drive committee, says they have also noticed in recent times a gap in personal hygiene products, specifically for women.

“The reason why it’s been going on for so long is, twice a year for socks and underwear, are (these are) some of the most needed items for these people, and yet the least donated items.”

Jones says it slips people’s minds as the homeless population does not have a place to store and wash their items.

She says the Fall 2022 campaign was one of their biggest successes in the Dignity Drive’s history, collecting 71 boxes of donated items to be dispersed amongst the Canadian Mental Health Association, the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre, Saint Lawrence Centre, Wapiti House, Northreach and Sunrise House.

“One common question that comes up is ‘why is it twice a year, why do we donate so much.’ It’s because they don’t have a place and they get used. We know what happens when we use socks and underwear, so that’s the main reason why so much is collected,” Jones says.

She adds donation drop-offs will also be at the GP Women’s Show from April 14-16, at Bonnetts Energy Centre and the Spring Home and Garden Show from April 24-26, at Evergreen Park.
