Over $510,000 given to 20 northwestern Alberta food security organizations

The provincial government has dispersed $10 million to food banks across Alberta to food security organizations to feed families and individuals struggling to put food on the table.

In November 2022, the province announced $20 million over two years to support food banks and related organizations in Alberta.

Since the funding announcement, 210 of these types of organizations have funding in grant form.

Out of $2.8 million, $118,00 went to nine food banks in northwestern Alberta, the breakdown goes as below:

• Beaverlodge Christmas Hamper and Food Bank – $8,000
• Central Peace Food Bank (Rycroft) – $8,000
• Fairview Food Bank Association – $15,000
• Fox Creek Foodbank Society – $8,000
• High Level Native Friendship Centre Food Bank – $8,000
• High Prairie & District Food Bank Society – $8,000
• Manning and Area Food Bank Society – $8,000
• Peace River Family Services – $15,000
• The Salvation Army Grande Prairie Community & Family Services – $40,000

Food Security Grants were provided to 76 organizations province-wide. $266,543 out of an allocated $2.9 million were given to 11 northwestern organizations:

• Central Peace Ministerial Association (Spirit River) – $5,000
• E.E. Oliver Family School Liaison Program (PRSD #10) – $19,200
• Grande Prairie and District Catholic Schools Education Foundation – $50,000
• Grande Prairie Friendship Centre – $50,000
• Interfaith Valleyview Community Food Bank Society – $50,000
• Khwahish Foundation of Grande Prairie – $22,000
• Municipal District of Opportunity No. 17 (Wabasca) – $50,000
• North Peace Youth Support Association (Fairview) – $9,843
• Pregnancy Care Centre Grande Prairie – $5,000
• Sexsmith and Area Foodbank – $50,000
• Town of Sexsmith – $5,500

The province also had put in a Donation Matching Grant on top of funding grants. More than $3.4 million has been used thus far and all 113 organizations that applied were provided with funding up to $50,000.

Six organizations in northwestern Alberta applied, and combined received $127,051 in Donation Matching Grant funding:

• Beaverlodge Christmas Hamper and Food Bank – $21,726
• Fairview Food Bank Association – $12,331
• High Level Native Friendship Centre Food Bank – $18,752
• High Prairie & District Food Bank Society – $22,897
• Interfaith Valleyview Community Food Bank Society – $29,884
• Sexsmith and Area Foodbank – $21,461

In addition to the three funding streams, the province is giving Food Banks Alberta $150,000 to strengthen the food bank network in Alberta to train food bank staff, develop an improved data system, and enable bulk food purchasing.
