Canada Day in Grande Prairie

Grande Prairie’s Canada Day festivities will kick off with a parade through the downtown.

The parade will begin at 2 p.m. at Hillside School, and make its way down 96 Street and 100 Avenue, eventually ending at the Northwestern Polytechnic parking lot.

The city has announced a number of road closures for Saturday due to the parade.

100 Avenue between 96 and 106 Streets will be closed from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m., while 108 Avenue between 94 and 96 Streets, and 96 Street between 108 and 100 Avenues will both be closed from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

Motorists are encouraged to use 92 or 108 streets to avoid any north or southbound delays, and 116 or 68 avenues to avoid delays westbound or eastbound.

Following the parade, Muskoseepi Park will once again be the main hub for Canada Day activities in Grande Prairie.

Events will begin at around 3:30 p.m. and will include free drop-in swimming at the outdoor pool until 1 p.m., carnival rides, games, a kids’ zone, beer gardens, and cake.

There will also be live entertainment at the Amphitheater, including TJ Rucks, the Brent Boivin Band, Hailey Benedict, and The Northbloods.

The day will wrap up with fire dancers from 10:30 to 11:30 p.m., with fireworks to follow that.

All activities at the park, with the exception of the b r gardens, are free to take part in.

Transit services

The city has announced that it will be extending its transit hours of service on Saturday to allow residents to be able to take part in Canada Day festivities at Muskoseepi Park.

Transit buses will operate under their regular Saturday schedule from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., with on-demand and accessible transit services being made available between any stops in GP between 9:15 p.m. and 1 a.m.

Residents can book rides until 12:30 that evening, either through the Grande Prairie My Ride app, by calling 780-830-RIDE, or online at gpmyride.app.ridewithvia.com

Transit services will be free of charge on Canada Day.

The city also announced that transit routes 4, 6, 7, and 8 will be unavailable from 1:30 to 3:30 pm on Saturday due to the Canada Day parade.

Routes 1 and 3 are being re-routed between 1:30 and 4 p.m.
that day, while routes 2, 5, and 9 will not be affected by the parade.
