City Hall to take sports dome location ideas to the community

Oct 18, 2023 | 6:00 AM

Update: The city says public engagement will happen sometime in November. A formal announcement will be made later.

City Hall officials will soon be meeting with the public about future plans for a new sports dome.

The city wants to talk to the school divisions, neighbourhood, user groups and other stakeholders about one of two possible locations.

One is north of the pickleball courts and east of Legion Field. The other is south of those same pickleball courts where a ball diamond is currently located (picture below).

The first idea would also include a northward extension of the current parking lot. The second would include a proposal for parking across the alley from houses near where the old Comp and Leisure Centre are currently sitting. Both are being demolished.

Mayor Jackie Clayton says the dome would not be just for soccer.

“This is a recreation, grass turf facility, so a facility that will support the needs of soccer, football, other organizations that play on grass turf. It’s a covered grass turf space in a dome-type facility.”

Three other possibilities were considered as well. That included two that would have been east of 105 Street on the site of the old Comp. and Leisure Centre. The third would have been south of the pickleball courts but running east and west.

Clayton says cutting down the list will allow for a focused conversation with the community.

“Going out with five, you have input that’s a little bit diluted but going out with a focused conversation in regard to these are the two council thinks suit the needs and desire of not only our user groups but our adjacent neighbourhoods and the high schools that are also in that area, so I think you’ll have a very full conversation.”

Clayton says once the consultation takes place with the community, a full report will come back to council.

“Discussing the feedback council heard or that administration heard from the community in regard to those locations, then council will talk about timelines, budget implications and what the next steps are.”

Dates when the public consultations will take place will be announced later.
