The provincial Education Minister visited Grande Prairie this week for the official re-opening of St. Patrick School and to announce grant money going towards a dual credit course at St. John Paul II Catholic School.

Demetrios Nicolaides toured the St. John Paul II fabrication/welding lab on Tuesday.

The lab is getting $100,000 through the province’s dual credit grant to support students going into future post-secondary studies or careers in the welding field.

“Alberta Education is committed to empowering students to pursue various career paths to support success inside and outside the classroom. Through dual credit programs, students can transition seamlessly into their next opportunity, whether it is post-secondary education, trade designations or various workplaces. Enhancing these opportunities is essential to encouraging high school completion and building a skilled, educated and engaged workforce to support Alberta’s growing economy. – Demetrios Nicolaides, Minister of Education

The funds are being used to enhance the welding apprenticeship class, where high school students can earn credits to go towards both high school and post-secondary.

In total, Alberta Education is distributing $3.6 million dollars through 45 dual credit start-up grants and 16 dual credit enhancement grants this academic year to 47 school authorities.

“It was truly exciting for Minister Nicolaides to visit St. John Paul II Catholic High School. It was great we had the chance to showcase our welding apprenticeship class, where the minister could see first-hand the positive impact the provincial dual credit enhancement grant is making for our students.”Roger Lauck, director of teaching and learning, Grande Prairie and District Catholic Schools
