Provincial grid at high risk of rotating power outages

Jan 13, 2024 | 7:22 PM

An Alberta Emergency Alert has been issued by the AEMA as extreme cold blankets the province and the electricity grid is at high risk of rotating outages overnight.

Albertans are being asked to limit their use of energy to only the essentials, immediately.

Our grid receives electricity from neighbouring provinces, but extreme cold has impacted electricity sharing, resulting in the alert.

Some ways to minimize electricity use is to:

  • Turn off lights and electrical appliances
  • Limit use of space heaters
  • Delay using power-consuming appliances like dishwashers, washers and dryers
  • Not charging electric vehicles and plugging in block heaters
  • Cook with a microwave, toaster oven, or crockpot instead of an oven or electric stove
  • Work on a laptop instead of a desktop computer
  • Limit the use of bathroom ventilation fans
  • Unplug any electric appliances when they are not in use, especially power bars as they continue to drain energy even if they are off
  • Close shades/blinds/curtains to cover windows from drafts

The Alberta Electric System Operator has activated its emergency grid management plan to work with local distribution utilities to avoid rolling blackouts overnight.
