ASIRT investigating officer-involved shooting in Grande Prairie

Jan 21, 2024 | 8:00 AM

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating an offer-involved shooting that occurred during a heavy police presence in a northwest Grande Prairie neighbourhood on December 20.

Grande Prairie RCMP says a woman was held hostage in her home by a man with a gun on Wednesday, December 20, leading to the suspect being shot by RCMP, and both he and the woman being held hostage, taken to hospital.

Mounties say they were called out to a dispute at 11:00 a.m. at a home in northwest Grande Prairie.

Police say the man had assaulted and injured the woman, and fired a gun inside the home.

RCMP was able to contain the area, get inside the home and bring the woman out to safety.

After Mounties exited the residence with the woman, the suspect then fired his weapon.

Officers shot back, hitting the 42-year-old man.

The man was then transported to a nearby hospital to receive additional medical care, where he was charged with several criminal offences and remanded.

The injured woman was taken to hospital for treatment and released.

No officers or other members of the public were injured.

ASIRT’s investigation will examine the use of force by the officers and is asking anyone who may have information regarding the incident to contact investigators at 780-644-1483.
