Zone 8 athletes take home 27 medals and two awards at Alberta Winter Games

The Alberta Winter Games wrapped up Monday afternoon with a closing ceremony at the Grande Prairie Composite High School.

Three Zone awards were handed out; the Minister’s Cup for the most improved since the last games, the Alberta Cup for the most points, and the Spirit of Sport for fair play, sportsmanship, team spirit, and cooperation on and off the field.

The awards went to:

  • Zone 8 – Minister’s Cup
  • Zone 3 – Alberta Cup
  • Zone 8 – Spirit of Sport

On top of Zone 8 receiving two of the three awards, athletes from our area took home 27 medals over the weekend. The breakdown of medals is five gold, seven silver, and 15 bronze.

Gold medals:

  • Grande Prairie’s Wesley Gaultier – Cross Country Skiing U12 Male Sprint
  • Wesley Gaultier – Cross Country Skiing U12 Male Free Technique Event
  • Grande Prairie’s Austin Dougherty – Archery U17 Recurve Male
  • Grande Prairie’s Troy Martin – Cross Country Skiing U14 Male Free Technique Event
  • Grande Prairie’s William Armstrong – Cross Country Skiing U16 Male Free Technique Event

Silver medals:

  • William Armstrong – Cross Country Skiing U16 Male Sprint
  • Calgary’s Issac Astete – Wrestling Male 40kg
  • Grande Prairie’s Hayden Cooke – Wrestling Male 83+kg (95 max)
  • Grande Prairie’s James Hartman – Biathlon Dev 1 (U15) Mass Start Male

The Zone 8 Male Hockey team placed third in the eight-team tournament. They beat Zone 2 (Big Country) 6-5 in the bronze medal game. Zone 8 (Peace Country) team members below:
