Holy Family school board endorses division change for St. Thomas More

The idea of Fairview’s St. Thomas More school switching divisions has taken a step ahead.

At its May meeting, the board of the Holy Family Catholic Regional Division gave unanimous support to entering a process that would see the school switch to Holy Family from Grande Prairie & District Catholic Schools.

The board at the Grande Prairie division will discuss this at a future meeting. If those trustees approve a similar motion, the idea will then go the Minister of Education.

A survey of 73 STM families done by Grande Prairie & District Catholic Schools in April found that 84 per cent of respondents would consider working with the Holy Family division.

The other 16 per cent wanted to stay with the Grande Prairie division.

In March, Grande Prairie & District Catholic Schools reached an agreement with the Peace River School Division to have a temporary location for St. Thomas More located on the E.E. Oliver Elementary School property in time for the 2024-25 school year.

STM students have spent this school year at the Northwestern Polytechnic campus in Fairview because of renovations that were made more costly because of an asbestos issue. The work was paused in December.
