Start of Evergreen Park horse racing season delayed one day

Jul 4, 2024 | 7:00 AM

Evergreen Park says the 2024 horse racing season will not start on Saturday as was originally scheduled.

The season will now start Sunday. Post time will be 1:15 p.m.

Evergreen Park says there aren’t enough horses to run both days as there were races in Lethbridge and Millarville over the Canada Day long weekend. Horses usually race every other weekend.

There will be 15 days of thoroughbred and quarter-horse races this year. Post time will be 1:15 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday, with the final day set for August 25

Evergreen Park says in a release that there are a half dozen “big event days” planned this summer.,

The first will be the annual Weiner Dog Derby on July 21.

After that comes Derby Day July 28. Anyone going can dress up to try to win a prize in a best-dressed contest. There is also a brunch the release describes as “fancy.” The GP Oaks and GP Derby will both be run that day.

BaconFest will be held August 4. Money raised from selling bacon-themed food will go towards the County of Grande Prairie Firefighters Association.

The people who helped get horse racing going in this area will be saluted at Memorial/Pioneer weekend on August 10 and 11.

People can buy food items produced locally at Open Farm Day August 18.

The Mr. Mike’s Steakhouse Casual Paint The Park Purple – Race For the Cure is set for the final day of the season, August 25. This will raise money for research and bring awareness to pancreatic cancer.

Racing Manager Pat Hill says in a release that there are stakes races just about every weekend.

“We are looking forward to the race meet starting and having everyone here again enjoying our facility for the summer,” says Hill in that same release.
