Heat wave continues in western Canada

Jul 8, 2024 | 8:14 AM

The heat wave sweating out the majority of western Canada is expected to last until midweek, according to Environment Canada.

Daytime highs of 30 to 35 are projected across Alberta, with Grande Prairie specifically expecting a high of 33 today. (Monday, July 8)

Until this heat wave is over residents are reminded that conditions like heat stroke are more common, and take extra precautions to protect themselves and their families:

  • Consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day.
  • Take frequent breaks from the heat, spending time in cooled indoor spaces where possible.
  • Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.
  • Check for your children or pets before you exit your vehicle. Do not leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle, for any length of time.

At this time, Environment Canada has issued heat warnings for parts of eight provinces and the Northwest Territories.

Due to these high temperatures, the wildfire danger level in the Grande Prairie Forest Area is very high.
