County of Grande Prairie Council declares agricultural disaster

Aug 24, 2024 | 7:00 AM

County of Grande Prairie Council has declared an agricultural disaster due to poor crop yields.

County Reeve Bob Marshall says the poor yield was due to the hot dry weather experienced by the region.

“They are way lower than what they would normally be,” says Marshall. “Primarily because of the drought conditions that we’ve experienced this year. We have had rain earlier but the heat in July was not good. We needed some moisture with that heat and unfortunately all we got was the heat.”

Marshall says the declaration will allow the County to advocate for aid from the Provincial and Federal governments.

“Seeing if there’s any programs available or something that can assists our producers with the disasters that they’re experiencing from a crop perspective and a hay perspective as well,” he says. “We don’t have anything ourselves around programs for that, that’s typically a provincial or federal government relief program that we’d look at.”

County Council made the declaration officially during their meeting Thursday.
