Northwest Peace FASD to host FASD Awareness Day events

Sep 4, 2024 | 1:25 PM

An awareness movement for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) will take place across Canada on Monday, September 9.

Gwen Vekved, executive director of Northwest Peace FASD, says an event will be held at Muskoseepi Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“This year we’re doing a proclamation at noon and also a walk through Muskoseepi Park. There’s also a free barbecue lunch sponsored by the Rotary Club of Grand Prairie, and we do have information tables also available in the pavilion, and there’s also free face painting.”

Vekved adds that, along with other Canadian landmarks across the country, the sundial at Centre 2000 will be lit up red on Monday evening, to help raise awareness for FASD.

Similar events, including awareness walks, will also be held across Alberta and Canada for FASD Awareness Day, as it affects a large number of Canadians.

“Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, FASD, describes the impacts on the brain and body of individuals prenatally exposed to alcohol and it is a lifelong disability. At this point, FASD impacts approximately four per cent of Canadians.”

“It (FASD) impacts more people in Canada than autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy and down syndrome combined. So there is a huge reason to prevent birth defects during your pregnancy and to support those to remain healthy during that time,” said Vekved.
