National Day for Truth and Reconciliation ceremony and Walk/Run on Monday

Sep 27, 2024 | 11:46 AM

The Grande Prairie Friendship Centre is holding its fourth annual Orange Shirt Day 5km Walk/Run on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30.

The event in the past has drawn a crowd of over 200 people to walk along the city’s trails to commemorate Truth and Reconciliation Day and to remember those who went through the residential school system.

Sheila Moerkoert with GPFC says it is also done in support of Every Child Matters.

“It is a sea of orange and everyone coming together and walking for the same reasons.”

The Walk/Run is happening Monday at the Muskoseepi Park Pavillion. Registration starts at 4 p.m. and the event kicks off at 5 p.m.

A traditional pipe ceremony was also held Friday morning at the GPFC’s Traditional Healing Garden.

“This is a great opportunity for our membership and community to come together and share stories and heal.”

“All of our events are open to everybody, we are just really thankful that we are able to provide this space for the community.”

There will also be a ceremonial event held earlier in the day by the Grande Prairie Aboriginal Circle of Services at Maskwoteh Park. There will be a pipe ceremony starting at 9 a.m., followed by a free barbeque at the Muskoseepi Park Amphitheatre, then activities like dancers, drummers, and testimonials by residential school survivors.
