Local hockey weekend recap: Jan 16-19

Hockey leagues across the Peace region still played this past weekend despite freezing temperatures and less than ideal road conditions.

AJHL Grande Prairie Storm

The Grande Prairie Storm hosted the Devon Xtreme for a pair of weekend games.

The first game Friday night the Storm were shutout 3-0, but were able to come back and win 4-1 on Saturday.

The Storm are still second in the North Division with 43 points, 9 points behind Whitecourt.

Their next game is Tuesday January 21, in Bonnyville where they take on the Pontiacs.

Strike Group NWJHL

The North West Junior Hockey League had seven regular season games over the weekend, and hosted their All-Star game on Sunday afternoon.

On Friday:

  • The North Peace Navigators beat the Dawson Creek Kodiaks 4-2.
  • The Fairview Flyers lost to the La Crete Lumber Barons 7-2.
  • The Fort St. John Huskies won 6-3 over the Beaverlodge Blades.
  • The County Wheat Kings shutout the Sexsmith Vipers 3-0.

On Saturday:

  • The Blades beat the Wheat Kings 7-1.
  • The Kodiaks hosted, and won 5-4 over the Vipers.
  • The Lumber Barons had an 8-1 victory over the Navs.

The leagues All-Star game on Sunday was hosted in Sexsmith. The East/West Division won 8-3 over the North/South Division.

The mid-week game will be in Fairview, where the Flyers host the Wheat Kings on Wednesday.

Puck drop is 8:00 p.m.

NPHL

The Senior Men’s North Peace Hockey League had six games played over the weekend.

On Thursday:

  • The Fort St. John Flyers beat the Dawson Creek Canucks 7-4.
  • The Spirit River Rangers travelled to Grande Prairie, and beat the Athletics 5-1.

On Saturday:

  • The Athletics lost to the Flyers 4-1.
  • The Manning Comets won 3-1 over the Valleyview Jets.
  • The Rangers lost to the Fox Creek Knights 7-4.

The lone game Sunday had the Falher Pirates winning 5-2 over Fox Creek.

The league resumes Thursday January 23, with three games: Grande Prairie hosts Dawson Creek, Spirit River is at Falher, and High Prairie heads to Valleyview.

All games start at 8:30 p.m.
