Alberta increases funding for fire services training

Fire departments across Alberta will soon be able to access more money to support training efforts.

The Government of Alberta is doubling funds for the Fire Services Training Program (FSTP) to $1 million.

Minister of Municipal Affairs Ric McIver says all municipalities, Metis Settlements and First Nations in the province can apply.

“We are committed to public safety and improving how we support our brave and dedicated fire services. We appreciate the valuable feedback we received during our fire service review and look forward to the ongoing dialogue and collaboration we’ll achieve through the Provincial Fire Liaison Committee,” says McIver.

Money under the FSTP can be used for things like course fees for fire services training, facility rentals to offer instructional programming, instructor expenses and more.

Another $85,000 will help the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association (AFCA) to conduct risk assessments, develop fire response plans, and determine training needs.

The Government will also establish a committee aiming to strengthen ties between the provincial government, local governments and fire services to bolster public safety.

Chief Randy Schroeder, President of the AFCA, says the new announcements will make a difference in improving safety.

“The government support provided here today to our municipalities will play a crucial role in enhancing the skills and training of Alberta firefighters, ultimately leading to safer communities and continuously enhancing emergency response,” says Schroeder.
