Slow down!

GPES sending out warning as speeding increases

Jul 16, 2026 | 3:06 PM

The Grande Prairie Enforcement Services is putting out a reminder to all motorists to follow posted speed limits.

GPES says they are noticing an increase in speeding around the City, with Peace Officer Sergeant Ryan Hoffman saying “as speeds go up, braking distances increase and our field of vision is reduced; This ultimately puts all road users at risk.”

Recently, GPES recorded a resident travelling 119 km/h in a 60km/h zone, while Clairmont RCMP issued a mandatory court summons to a GP resident, who was pulled over going 202 km/h on Highway 43, near Wembly.

GPES adds that when drivers exceed speed limits, they reduce their ability to react to unexpected hazards and risk serious collisions, with one in four fatal collisions involving unsafe speeds, according to Alberta Transportation data.

“Whether driving across the city, heading out of town, or travelling for summer activities, slowing down can make all the difference in getting everyone home safely.”
