Chariot Fest to temporarily impact downtown traffic Saturday

A parade procession for the Grande Prairie Chariot Festival will be happening on Saturday, August 1, in downtown Grande Prairie.

Drivers can expect traffic impacts and delays between 11:15 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Temporary road closures will move with the procession as it makes its way from the Montrose Cultural Centre parking lot, south on 99 Street to 101 Avenue, west to 102 Street, then north on 102 Street to the pathway leading to the Muskoseepi Park amphitheatre just before 102 Avenue.

Road users travelling north or south through downtown are encouraged to use 98 Street to avoid delays, and southbound traffic can go east on 105 Avenue to travel around the procession.

Other traffic notes include:

  • 99 Street will be closed from the MCC parking lot to 101 Avenue near the start of the event.
  • Eastbound traffic on 101 Avenue will be restricted from 102 Street to 99 Street.
  • Westbound traffic on 101 Avenue will close behind the procession and reopen as it clears each intersection.
  • 100 Street and 102 Street will remain open as long as possible and will close briefly, approximately eight to 10 minutes, as the procession passes through each intersection.
  • Drivers who miss posted detour signage will be redirected at 102 Avenue southbound and 100 Avenue northbound.
  • Local Traffic Only signage will be in place at 101 Avenue and 98 Street, and at 103 Avenue and 98 Street.

It is not expected to impact transit routes, but riders may experience short delays as buses wait for the procession to clear intersections. Stop 838 may be temporarily unavailable while buses detour around the closure.
