Pickleball courts proposed for Grande Prairie

Dec 4, 2017 | 1:03 PM

The newly formed Grande Prairie Pickleball Association would like to see a change to the tennis courts near the Dave Barr Community Centre.

A community consultation is being held Tuesday, December 5 at the Coca-Cola Centre to gather input from the public on upgrading the courts into pickleball courts. This would be an approximately $100,000 venture with the association applying for grants to help pay for it.

City Manager of Recreation and Sport Kylee Haining explains that, if the proposal goes ahead, the two courts would be made into six permanent courts for pickleball. According to Haining, it is one of the fastest growing sport in North America.

“It is kind of on a badminton-size court and it is sort of a combination of tennis, table-tennis, and badminton. It is a little plastic ball with holes in it. It is designed to go not as fast nor as hard as a tennis ball.”

The public would be able to use the courts as drop-in and league play, but they would not be available during a tournament.

“When the inquiry came forward, I went around with the folks from pickleball and we had a look at the facilities and looked at what the opportunities were. Dave Barr presented itself as an opportunity.”

The consultation is at 6:30 p.m. in the KMSC Law Room.
